Program Notes

Program Description
Study documentary photography and art for social change in Tanzania, an African nation rich in indigenous cultures and spectacular wildlife. Students will enjoy hands on photographic workshops and working with communities involved in collaborative art projects that stimulate social change.

Once in Tanzania, your safari will take you to the National Parks and reserves of Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire for documentary photography amid the savanna. The parks contain spectacular concentrations of wildlife that are habituated to vehicles, allowing close observation of various aspects of animal behavior including foraging, social interactions within species, and multiple-species interactions. While on tribal lands the indigenous people will be your guides taking you to culturally significant areas like hidden caves of Maasai warriors, Singing Rocks of the Hadzabe Hunter/Gatherers and waterfalls of the Iraq people. Daily field excursions will be supplemented with nightly campfire discussion about art for social change, culture, photography and conservation issues.

Students reside in shared tents when we stay on tribal lands and in shared rooms in lodges during most National Park excursions with meals provided at all locations.

Whether you’re interested in documentary photography or art for social change, the Winter Session in Tanzania is your chance to capture the splendor of African animals in their natural environment and understand the ethics and principals of photographing local people. You will learn firsthand about the real, practical challenges involved in the survival of various ethnic groups and how individuals are creating works of art as a sustainable source of income.

The Program Fee includes all lodging, all meals, drinking water, tips, ground transportation in Tanzania, a departure tax, and international health insurance for the duration of the program.

The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to/from Tanzania, nor airport transfers within the U.S. The program officially begins when students arrive in Tanzania. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket. See the Cost section below for estimate airfare. Once accepted, students will be asked to purchase their plane ticket by June 1, 2017, to guarantee that they can travel together on the same flights.

Students should budget extra for vaccinations, laundry services at the lodges, equipment for this program, and a visa to enter Tanzania. The group will receive specific vaccination guidance from Student Health Services before departure. Students will be required to bring binoculars, sleeping bag/sleeping pad, hiking shoes, two water bottles, a fleece, raincoat, hat, sunglasses, and hiking clothes. Students should also budget an additional $110 for the necessary visa to enter Tanzania.
ACCESSIBILITY: Participants with disabilities should know that accessibility and accommodation in some program locations may differ from the United States. Transit systems and legacy building construction practices may not meet U.S. accessibility standards, and alternative access to public transportation, buildings, or public sites cannot be guaranteed. But UD students with disabilities are welcome and encouraged to study abroad. Review these questions with the Office of Disability Support Services to determine whether this program can meet your accommodation needs.
Program Courses
Students must enroll in all credit-bearing courses for a grade. Only the UNIV (zero credit) course may be taken pass/fail. Audit registration is not permitted on UD Travel Study. Please refer to the University Catalog to verify requirements and prerequisites
Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for approval (check before departure).
All students must enroll in at least 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.
ART 289: Documentary Photography (3 credits)
This course introduces students to critical issues and practices in documentary photography and video. Students will study the influence of social documentarians like Sebastiao Salgado, Robert Frank, and Esther Bubley. Discussions examine the relationship of word and image, the role of photo editors and the development of the photo-essay.
ART 324: The Art of Social Change (3 credits)
The arts provide an important stimulus to initiate social change. This course aims to immerse students in the arts to investigate social change work at the local and global level. Students will engage in discussions with local leaders and proponents of social change. Community projects will connect students to real-world initiatives involving social change through the arts. Field excursions and reflective journals will supplement class discussion.

To earn the Second Writing Requirement, students must receive a minimum grade of 'C-'. This course must be taken after completion of ENGL110 and after completion of at least 60 credit hours.
UNIV 370-095: Study Abroad - Tanzania ART (0 credits) pass/fail
Students are asked to reflect upon changes in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes that occur due to their study abroad experience.

Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). We encourage freshmen to apply!

Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, which is based on academic quality and demonstrated ability to contribute to the objectives of the program. Early application is encouraged.
For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including at least one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

A transcript is required from Non-UD applicants only. Non-UD students, please send a copy of your official transcript to: IGS, Clayton Hall, 100 David Hollowell Drive, Newark, DE 19716 USA.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. Please review the study abroad acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we encourage you to apply to another program.
Costs
How much does it cost?.
  • University of Delaware Tuition/Fees for one Winter Session
  • Travel Study Program Fee
    • Usually covers: housing, all program-related excursions and some meals (check with the program's faculty director for details).
    • Does NOT cover: airfare to/from the program site and ground transportation to/from the U.S. departure airport. For planning purposes only, we estimate roundtrip airfare to be approximately $2,000.00.
  • Plan ahead for how to pay for travel study, and make sure you understand the costs associated with your program.
When and how do I pay?
If you are offered acceptance to the program, you will have 3 days to withdraw without financial penalty. After the 3 days have passed, you will be officially accepted to the program, and IGS will post the full Program Fee and Tuition/Fees to your UD student account.
  • An initial payment of $1000.00 will be due in mid-May.
  • The balance of the Program Fee and Tuition/Fees will be due in early January.
  • Payments are submitted through My Finances in UDSIS.
  • All charges, once posted to your account, are considered non-refundable.
Other important things to note:
  • Program Fees are subject to change until the group's departure date. Final Program Fees may increase due to unforeseen local cost increases, fluctuations in exchange rates, or changes in the group size.
  • IGS reserves the right to cancel a program at any time due to under-enrollment, safety/health/security issues, staffing issues, or any other relevant reason. If your program is cancelled, you will receive a full refund of all Program Fees paid.
