Summer 2018: Italy/Spain LEAD - micro

Program Dates June 10, 2018 - June 30, 2018 (dates are tentative)
This program is closed.

Program Overview Please note that First Semester Freshmen are eligible for participation and encouraged to apply to this program.

What does it take to be a successful leader in today’s and tomorrow’s interconnected world? Increasingly, the answer is “cultural intelligence”: the ability to understand, appreciate differences, communicate, adapt, and strategize in intercultural environments and situations.

Spend two weeks in Volterra under the Tuscan sun in the heart of Italy. Then board the Celebrity Constellation cruise ship for a one week cruise from Rome to Spain, with port stops in Nice (France), Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona. We will use these settings and experiences to explore how leaders are using cultural intelligence to advance their organizations and cultivate successful teams, while you develop your own leadership skills and cultural sensitivity. This micromester is open to all students in all majors.

Volterra is a walled city rich with landmarks of Etruscan, Roman and Medici Florentine history. Acclaimed by travel reviewers as Tuscany’s most beautiful and vibrant town, it will be evident why the Twilight movies were filmed in Volterra. We will visit museums, theaters, cathedrals and artisan and craft shops. Discover local restaurants and bistros as you make your way down winding streets. Our excursions will also take us to Montalcino, Florence and Rome. We will enjoy intimate talks with leaders who will discuss the challenges of developing innovative new programs and solutions, while reconciling local and global cultures.

On the cruise, ship officers will give us an “up close and personal” look at the leadership challenge of forming collaborative relationships among crew from dozens of different countries all over the world who bring with them different languages, customs, ethnicities and diverse cultural backgrounds. We will also have several unique “behind the scenes” ship board experiences. Our cruise will end with a full day excursion in Barcelona, home of the spectacular Gaudi Church of the Sacred Family and famous for its Park Guell.

Whether you’re a freshman or a senior, and no matter what your major or future professional plans, you can be a better leader because of this unique experience.

The Program Fee includes housing, academic and cultural excursions, guest speakers and visits to multiple course-related sites and international medical insurance. Students will be housed in dormitories in Italy. While in Italy the program fee includes 2-3 meals a day and housekeeping services. There is a coin operated laundry and a gym. A shuttle is also available to take students back and forth to town. Students will spend 6 nights on a cruiseship (two to a cabin) with all onboard meals (in fact, all you can eat), cruiseship entertainment, and housekeeping included.

The Program Fee does NOT include airfare to/from Europe, nor airport transfers within the U.S. Optional excursions while on the cruise are not included, nor are expenses related to independent travel students may take while in Italy. The program officially begins when students arrive in Italy. Students will receive detailed travel instructions after acceptance, explaining how and where to purchase their plane ticket.
