International Projects - CFIS Faculty Fellows Program

In order to enhance the international dimensions of teaching, research and outreach at the University of Delaware, the Center for International Studies sponsors the CFIS Faculty Fellows Program. Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive basis and interdisciplinary initiatives are strongly encouraged. Proposals must demonstrate impact on the international profile of the University of Delaware.

Examples of Supported Projects:

  • Organization of a national or international conference or workshop on an international topic
  • Development and teaching of a new interdisciplinary course in international or area studies
  • Development of a major grant proposal
  • Development of a new certificate program
  • Curricula development or revision
  • Development of a new study abroad program in an under-represented region

In addition to completing the objectives outlined in a Fellow's proposal, the fellow will be expected to:

  • Participate in at least two CFIS staff meetings during the semester
  • Spend a portion of their time with collaborators in the host unit on a weekly basis
  • Participate in CFIS-sponsored event or seminar series which might highlight the work of the Fellows
  • Submit a final report within 30 days of the completion of the Fellowship. The report should focus on accomplishments and expected outcomes

Although sponsored and administered by CFIS, the Faculty Fellow may have the opportunity to collaborate in any interested center (or unit) on campus. In some cases, CFIS may be the best match for a Fellow, but in other cases, the focus of a Fellow's international interests may be more appropriately aligned with one of the University's other centers. The Fellowship is awarded in close collaboration between CFIS, the faculty member, the home department chair and dean, and the hosting Center.

    Eligibility

Full-time tenured and non-tenure track faculty at the University of Delaware are eligible to submit a proposal. Adjunct, visiting, retired, and emeritus faculty, as well as students, are not eligible. Both the dean and the chair in whose unit the grantee has his or her primary appointment must support the proposal. All proposals must have some matching contribution from the Department, College, or relevant unit. Any faculty fellowship award is contingent upon the relevant dean's acceptance of the fellowship terms and replacement cost award, and the acceptance of the Director of the host Center or unit.

    Amount of Grant

The CFIS Faculty Fellowship is funded by CFIS and the faculty member's department and /or college. CFIS provides a 1 course buy-out for the faculty and provides a $2500 research fund and $2500 travel fund for use during the Fellowship period. The amount of the award for replacement cost is individually negotiable between the Director of CFIS and the dean and chair in whose unit the grantee has his or her primary appointment. CFIS Faculty Fellowships are awarded for one semester.

    Application Procedure/Deadlines

There are no application forms. Proposals should contain the following:

  • a description of your specific objectives and expected outcomes
(identify areas of collaboration with the faculty and professionals from the hosting Center)
  • a budget which indicates the proposal's objectives can be accomplished within the time frame and with the available funding
(indicate any matching funds or additional support)
  • a letter of support from the home Department Chair
  • a letter of support from the home Dean
  • if the fellow is interested in collaboration with a unit other than CFIS, she/he must include a letter of support from the hosting Director (or Department Chair), indicating the Fellow will have some space and resources available in their unit to facilitate collaboration
  • an abbreviated (1-2 pg) curriculum vitae

Proposals, not to exceed ten pages (including budget, letters of support and cv) should be submitted electronically as a WORD or PDF attachment to lesa@udel.edu below by March 30 and awardees will be notified of their selection by April 15.
