Institute Objectives: STUDY OF THE UNITED STATES INSTITUTE
The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs supports and administers activities intended to promote the free exchange of ideas, and to increase mutual understanding between citizens of the United States and people around the world. The underlying principle on which the Bureau operates is that accurate and honest mutual perception will favorably influence relations between the United States and other countries. Many educational and cultural exchange programs are funded and administered by the Bureau, the most well-known of which is the Fulbright Program. The Study of the United States Branch promotes better understanding of the society, culture, government, and other institutions of the United States among foreign university faculty, secondary educators, and other relevant audiences. Program subject areas include American studies, American literature, U.S. history, political science, law, economics, public policy, civic education or any field in the humanities or social sciences related to the study of the United States. The Branch offers an annual series of six-week, U.S. university-based exchange programs for foreign participants. These graduate-level Institutes focus on a variety of U.S. studies disciplines and themes. It also provides funding support for conferences, seminars, workshops and other educational activities abroad that focus on the United States. The Branch donates collections of U.S. studies books to libraries and resource centers in other countries, including Branch-produced titles such as Basic Readings in U.S. Democracy and The American Reader series, as well as commercially-published scholarly works and reference sets. A website providing useful links to a variety of U.S. studies resources is maintained by the Branch. The address is: http://exchanges.state.gov/education/amstudy/ For more information:
