International Projects - Grants and Projects
U.S. Department of State/The University of Algiers

In 2002, the Center collaborated with the English Language Institute (ELI) to submit a successful proposal to the U.S. Department of State for a partnership with the University of Algiers. ELI will implement a three-year program to provide teacher training and curriculum development in Business English for Algerian EFL teachers, and Algerian faculty will provide UD faculty and students with insight and information into Algeria as a whole and the role of Islam in society, business, and economics. The outcomes of the project for the University of Algiers will include: the intensive training of up to 44 Algerian business EFL teachers in current teaching methods; the development of the UA English Department's teacher training curriculum to include courses in Business EFL methodology; the creation of courses and course syllabi in Business English for UA's intensive English program; and the launching of a nation-wide teacher training conference addressing the needs of Business EFL teachers. The outcomes of the project for the University of Delaware will include the raising of awareness among students and faculty of Arab culture and Islamic issues through UA faculty participation in discussion groups, seminars, workshops, and multi-cultural courses in Women's Studies and the College of Business and Economics.
