International Projects - Salzburg Seminar

Deadline: 4:30 p.m. December 1

Each year hundreds of scholars, business leaders, diplomats, politicians, judges and others from all over the world gather in Salzburg, Austria to participate in The Salzburg Seminar, one of the world's foremost international educational experiences. The University of Delaware has had a special relationship with the Salzburg Seminar for nearly thirty years.

The Program: Housed in the Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg, Austria, the Seminar consists of extended, week-long conversations about a wide range of vital issues. Each session brings together fifty to sixty mid-career professionals from around the world to work with a distinguished international faculty for seven very intensive days. Lectures, workshops, and small groups discussions often stretch well into the evening, broken at intervals by chamber music, strolls around the lake, and mountains of food from the Schloss's first-class kitchen.

The range of topics covered in the Seminar's series of sessions is nearly as diverse as the Seminar fellows. For a full description of the sessions -- and of the Seminar itself -- go to: www.salzburgseminar.org.

Who may apply? Although any full-time member of the University of Delaware faculty or professional staff is eligible, preference will be given, other things being equal, to those who (1) have not yet been a Salzburg Seminar Fellow; (2) have relatively limited international experience; and (3) are at or near the mid-point of their career. Full-time professionals are encouraged to apply.

How much does it cost? Tuition, room, and board expenses -- the equivalent of $5,000 -- will be fully paid through a combination of scholarships made available to the University of Delaware by the Salzburg Seminar and by the Center for International Studies. It is expected that the Fellow's academic department, school, or college will defray travel costs to Salzburg.

What is the application procedure? Please see the calendar of sessions known to us at this time at Salzburg Seminar Sessions. Submit a proposal, not exceeding two pages, that identifies the following information:

    1. Title and dates of the session.
    2. How the session will assist in your professional development.
    3. What specific benefits will accrue to the university, your colleagues and your students from your participation in the session, e.g. new or revised course or research or other specific return to the University.

In addition to the proposal, interested faculty and professionals should submit a brief curriculum vitae and a letter of support from the Chair and/or Dean of the relevant unit, confirming that the unit will pay round trip travel to Salzburg. Proposals should be sent electronically (in MSWord format) to Lesa Griffiths, Director, Center for International Studies (lesa@udel.edu). For more information regarding the different Salzburg Seminar sessions and their dates, please visit www.salzburgseminar.org.

How will Fellows be selected? Proposals will be evaluated by a University committee chaired by Lesa Griffiths and composed of Salzburg Seminar alumni.

How many Fellows will be selected? Usually, two to four members of UD faculty and professional staff are recommended by the University Committee each year.

What is the application deadline? Applications need to be received at CFIS by December 1.

If you are interested in attending the luncheon or would like more information on the application process, please contact Lesa Griffiths at the Center for International Studies (lesa@udel.edu or at 831-2852).
