International Visiting Scholars
Request for Proposals
Deadline: 4:30 p.m., April 15
The Center for International Studies (CFIS) and the Office of Undergraduate Studies (OUS) invite applications from faculty for the International Visiting Scholars Award (IVSA) program, part of the University-wide America and the Global Community initiative. The initiative is designed to enhance opportunities for faculty and students to better understand the global challenges facing our society.
The IVSA program is meant to complement the University of Delaware's general education initiative in LIFE, Pathways, capstone, discovery learning, and core competencies (www.udel.edu/ugs/gened). The amount of each award will be up to $4000, and is intended to fund visits of up to 14 days by an international scholar.
Submission Requirements
Proposals must include:
- A brief summary of the visiting scholars credentials.
- A narrative explaining the significance of the scholar's visit to the UD general education initiative. The narrative should provide information on the format of the student-scholar interactions (guest lectures, discussion in student residence halls, etc.), and also include and describe other opportunities for student to meet and interact with the visiting scholar (speaking in other courses, campus events, journal clubs, brown-bag luncheons, and lab meetings).
- A budget containing enough evidence that the award is sufficient to support the visiting scholar for up to two weeks on campus.
- If the request is for an amount larger than $4000, the proposal must indicate the source of matching or other funds. All proposals are encouraged to include some matching support.
Proposal Criteria
- Proposals must be from full-time faculty at the University of Delaware.
- Proposals must advance the General Education initiative and international education and research at the University.
- Proposals must be submitted using the attached proposal template (page 1 and page 2).
Conditions for Funded Proposals
- All funds awarded must be spent between September 1 and June 30
- Faculty recipients must work closely with CFIS and OUS to maximize the opportunities for students to interact with the visiting scholar. Faculty recipients will coordinate the arrangements with the visiting scholar. Faculty are encouraged to contact the Center or the Office of Undergraduate Studies before submitting proposals in order to discuss their plans.
- Faculty recipients must provide CFIS and OUS with a report summarizing the visit within six weeks of its completion. The report should include a summary of the events in which the scholar participated, the impact the scholar had on students and faculty. It should also assess the impact of the scholar's visit on the overall objective of the program, which is to advance the general education initiative and international education and research at the University.
- Faculty may also be asked to participate in relevant forums and events on campus to describe their experiences with the visiting scholar.
An original and three (3) copies of the IVSA proposals are due by 4:30 p.m. on April 15, at the Center for International Studies, at the following address:
