Study Abroad - For Alumni & Returnees
1923 - Walter Hullihen, UD President

Walter S. Hullihen, president of the University of Delaware from 1920 until his death in 1944, was one of the University's greatest innovators. Among his administration's accomplishments were the founding of the University of Delaware Press, the construction of Memorial Hall as the University's library, and the founding of the Junior Year Abroad.

In The University of Delaware: A History, John A. Munroe (the H. Rodney Sharp Professor Emeritus of History) writes that Hullihen welcomed Kirkbride's proposal that students have the chance to study abroad. Hullihen, according to Munroe,

...saw [the plan's] broad possibilities (not only for the education of students at his and other universities and colleges, but for the cause of international understanding and world peace...), envisioned a number of such programs in various foreign countries, and furthered its development in every way he could.

Hullihen sought, and won, private backing for the plan, and continued to be a supporter of foreign study throughout his presidency.
