Packing tips:

Many students want to take as much abroad as they usually bring to college. Strongly discourage this instinct! Usually a maximum of two checked bags is permitted on international flights, but the happiest study abroad students nest one suitcase into the other -- providing ample space for gifts to bring home. Students should only take what is necessary. Toiletries (soap, toothpaste, etc.) can be bought almost anywhere, except possibly in rural areas in developing countries.

Hint: If possible, have a former student participant speak to your students about what they should and should not take with them.

Explain the different electric currents and the need to have converters and "male" plug adapters. Since batteries are cheaper in the U.S., suggest packing a supply for battery-operated appliances. Suggest buying an inexpensive blow dryer after arrival overseas and sharing it among roommates.

Students usually need to have one "dress-up" outfit (jacket and tie for men, dresses or skirts and blouses for women) for more formal occasions.
