Study Abroad - Once Accepted
Return to Checklist: Fall / Winter / Spring / Summer
Health Insurance:

Knowing how to deal with your health insurer while you're abroad can be a life-saver. If you can't answer these questions, call your insurer and ask - and make sure you bring the answers with you on your trip.

The big questions:
  • Is my policy valid overseas?
  • Is it valid in all the countries I'll be in?
  • Do you have an international telephone number?
Reimbursement:
  • How do I file a claim for reimbursement while I'm abroad?
  • What paperwork do I have to submit with the claim?
  • Can I get a supply of claim forms to take with me?
  • If the supporting documents are not in English, will I need to submit a notarized translation?
  • How long will it take for the claim to be processed?
  • Will the reimbursement be sent to me overseas, or to my hOme address?
Coverage:
  • What does my policy cover?
  • What is the basic medical deductible amount, and what's covered in it?
  • What are the policy's exclusions?
  • If I need refills on my prescription medications, will you reimburse for all or part of the cost? What do I need to submit for the reimbursement?
  • If I need routine non-emergency medical care while abroad, does my policy cover it?
  • To what extent are mental health services covered?
  • To what extent is hospitalization covered?
  • To what extent is dental care covered?
  • To what extent is eye care covered?
  • Is medical evacuation covered by my policy? To what extent?
  • If I need immunizations before I go, are they covered by my policy?
  • Is this policy available in the language of my host country?
