Study Abroad - Once Accepted
Return to Checklist: Winter / Summer
HTH Health Insurance and SOS Travel Assistance - Winter and Summer Programs:

During winter and summer session study abroad programs, students are automatically covered under the University's insurance policy with HTH Worldwide. (This coverage does NOT apply to students on domestic travel study programs.) With your airline ticket you will receive an insurance card; we will mail cards to the campus address of students who purchase their own airline tickets. Be sure to take this card with you when you go abroad. Make a copy of it and keep the copy in a safe place—somewhere other than in your wallet in case your wallet gets lost or stolen. Information on coverage and exclusions is available here. Please read this information carefully before you depart.

Please note: that HTH charges an additional fee to cover students age 50 and older. This fee will vary depending on the length of the program but can be estimated as follows: age 50-64 - $150; age 65-70 - $350; age 70-74 - $500. Coverage for students age 75 and older will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

On your insurance card you'll find a Certificate number that allows you to log in to HTH's Website and enjoy the benefits of their extensive database. You'll be able to look up health and safety information and search for health care providers at your study abroad destination. From the site you can also download a claim form, replace a lost I.D. card, check the status of a pending claim, and try out the medical translation guide. Perhaps most importantly, the policy provides you and your faculty director with round-the-clock toll-free access to expert HTH personnel, which can be invaluable in the event of a medical emergency.

If you should ever need to submit a claim to HTH, here is a quick link to the claim form.

Because this insurance policy provides substantial coverage for medical evacuation, repatriation of remains, and medical treatment, we do not recommend that students on winter or summer study abroad programs purchase the International Student I.D. card for coverage unless they plan to travel on their own outside of the program dates.

The University of Delaware also provides all faculty and students with emergency travel assistance through International SOS. This policy provides substantial coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation of remains, as well as some travel assistance such as legal referrals and assistance with lost documents. Note that International SOS is not a health insurance policy (unlike the HTH policy described above). Please read the information on the UD portal of the International SOS Web site to find out more about coverage and exclusions. With your airline ticket you will receive a SOS card containing the UD log-in number, but you can also download the information here.
