Study Abroad - Once Accepted
Return to Checklist: Fall / Spring
Insurance Overview:

You're expected to carry appropriate health insurance that will cover you if you need specialist treatment or hospitalization abroad. Health insurance is your responsibility. Contact your insurance carrier to ensure that your medical coverage will apply in the countries through which you'll be traveling, and make sure you ask what you have to do to activate that insurance.

Most U.S. insurers operate on a reimbursement plan, so keep receipts. Payments from U.S. insurance companies directly to a medical provider abroad are rare; be prepared to pay cash for medical services (your insurance company should reimburse you later).

Make sure that you bring the following information with you:
  • name and address of your insurance company
  • name of policy holder
  • number of insurance policy (very important!)
  • and make copies to leave at home.

If you're planning on driving while abroad, check with your insurance provider about whether your car insurance, or other insurance policy, is good overseas. Again, make sure you ask what you have to do to activate that insurance.
