"Friendships Around the World" Contest
First Place: "Children of Sfax", Ricky Berl, Winter 2008 Tunisia

Two students, Adam Greenspan and Alex Kirik, pose here with YouDee and several children that live in a suburb of Sfax, an industrial city on the east coast of Tunisia. We had been traveling around the country all week and at this point had stopped at our instructor's family's house to have lunch. When we got off the bus on the outskirts of Sfax, we were instantly swarmed by curious local children. Even though the popular culture in Tunisia is heavily influenced by western cultures, especially American pop culture, it's unlikely that any of these kids had ever actually seen an American.

Second Place: "Three Warriors", Matt Richards, Winter 2008 Siena, Italy FLLT

We spent the month learning Italian mostly by talking with locals, and by the end we began having casual conversations in Italian with people we met. This guy, whose job is walking around for photos with tourists, was nice and had a great sense of humor about the situation, just like everyone else we met.

Third Place: "UD Meets Locals", Keith Lambert, Winter 2008 Brazil FLLT

This photo is important because it showed the type of people that live in Brazil. While this woman was kind enough to take a picture with myself and the other members of our trip because of the Culture of tourism and the impact it has had on the locals of Salvador Brazil she wanted money after the pictures were taken. This picture reflects a lot of the lessons the group learned on this trip. It shows the impact that people like ourselves have on a community and the way of life of individuals as our presence exists over a long period of time. This photo was taken in the historic sector of Salvador.

"YoUDee Abroad" Contest
First Place: "YoUDee at Australia Day", Veronika Miketa, Winter 2008 Australia/New Zealand BUAD I

Australia Day is perhaps the most festive holiday for Australians. This day celebrates the birth of Australia and the arrival of the first colonial ships in Sydney. In the picture is YouDee enjoying a harbor cruise where each year the ferries of Sydney Harbor race each other chased by a crowd of boaters.
Second Place: "YoUDee’s Buttress", Michelle Pasawicz, Winter 2008 Brazil PLSC

This photo shows a large canopy tree native to Brazil with massive buttress roots breaking the soil line. This particular tree was grown in Jardim Botanical, though we saw many others in the Amazon Rain Forest. Amazonian native Indians would hit a stick against the side of the roots for communication in the dense forest.
Third Place: "YoUDee Learns to Hula", Pamela Feld, Winter 2008 Australia/Hawaii NURS
The group spent our last night in Hawaii experiencing a traditional Hawaiian luau. We learned how to hula dance and got to enjoy a show of traditional Hawaiian and Polynesian dances.
