First Place: "A Curious Smile", taken by Amanda Brophy

Some local Maasai men (elders and warriors) came to our campsite one evening to let us join them in a goat roast. This was a very special occasion because the Maasai warriors usually don't visit the study abroad groups, let alone allow us to take pictures of them. While we were waiting for the goat to finish cooking, the warriors taught us how they braid their hair and answered any questions we had. One UDel student took a picture of the warriors brading each other hair. As she went to show him his picture, I snapped this one. The only technology the Maasai have is an occasional cell phone, so the warrior found it very intriguing to see a picture of himself.

Second Place: "You Buy from Me", taken by Ayelet Daniel

In this photograph you can see one of my fellow friends on our hike in the town of Sapa in the northern city of Vietnam. When we first get off the van, we were immediately surrounded by women and children varying ages 5- 50. They would follow us along the hike, and would ask us many questions such as: "are you married? do you have a boyfriend? where are you from?" etc. In this picture, my friend Ange was talking to these little girls who carried a serious conversation in English for a good 2 hours. Although they were young and Vietnamese, they learned enough english to communicate with us and were interested to talk to us.

Third Place: "Spinning in Mitla", taken by Nicholas Verrochi

Delaware student Ted Briggs learns how to spin wool from an indigenous artisan in Mitla, Oaxaca, Mexico. While learning about the hardships faced by the indigenous women of Mexico, our group of students had the incredible opportunity to experience first hand the life and culture here in Oaxaca. Oaxaca is one of the poorest states, located in southern Mexico. The beautiful state is full of indigenous peoples famous for their skilled artisans. Here in Mitla, woven carpets are all handmade with completely natural materials.
