Berlin, Germany Undergraduate Business Exchange

Program Overview

The Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, in partnership with the Berlin School of Economics, offers business students the opportunity to study abroad in Berlin while taking business courses during the spring semester. Founded in 1971, the Berlin School of Economics is one of Germany 's leading universities specializing in business and economics. Approximately 5,400 students from over 60 countries are currently enrolled in its undergraduate and master's programs.

General Info / Student Life

The University: The Berlin School of Economics educates future managers, accountants and marketers with the aim of providing them with a broad multidisciplinary perspective, an international outlook and strong hands-on management competencies. All of BSE's 145 full-time professors hold a doctorate or PhD from well-known European Universities (e.g., London School of Business).

Language: All exchange courses are offered in English.

Calendar : This program is available for the Spring semester only. The Spring Semester runs mid March through mid July (BSE refers to this as the Summer Semester). The application deadline is October 15.

Visas and Passports: A valid passport is necessary to enter Germany . US citizens do NOT need a visa to study in Germany . Students from EU Member States, EFTA countries ( Iceland , Lichtenstein , Norway and Switzerland ), Australia , Canada , Israel , Japan , Korea , and New Zealand likewise do NOT need a visa. Please contact the German consulate that has jurisdiction over your permanent place of residence for further information.

Transportation: Students must purchase a BSE student ID card, at a cost of approximately €200, and this card includes a Semesterticket. The semesterticket is a nearly unlimited pass for public transportation throughout the city. The student ID card also gives you access to the library and other administrative services.

Housing: BSE operates several dormitories throughout the city, which are available to exchange students. The average cost of the dorms is €230 per month. If you prefer off-campus housing, the program coordinators will assist you in locating an apartment. The average monthly rent in Berlin is €200-€400.

Health Insurance: Students must provide proof of insurance. BSE recommends that student join the Student Health Insurance in Germany . The cost of this additional coverage is approximately €60 per month.

Courses: Exchange program courses are taught in English and can vary from semester to semester. The course offerings include introductory business courses as well as electives in Economics, Finance, Marketing, and Management. Business students may take up to two upper- division courses in their major at BSE.

Costs: Students pay their regular undergraduate full-time tuition to the University of Delaware via normal UD billing and payment procedures; they do not pay on-campus housing or meal plan. Students do not pay a deposit or program fee to the Center for International Studies. Any financial aid or scholarships that normally apply to tuition will continue to apply.

The cost of living for students in Berlin is estimated to be, on average, between €600-€750 per month. This includes rent in a dorm at €230 per month (note: off campus housing averages €200-€400 per month), meals, health insurance, books & materials, and incidental expenses.

Requirements

University of Delaware students who are sophomores or juniors majoring in Economics, Management, Marketing, Operations Management, International Business Studies, Accounting or Finance are eligible to apply. A minimum overall GPA of 2.8 is required.

Students apply directly to BSE after receiving a nomination from the Advising Office in the Lerner College of Business and Economics.
