Program Overview

G'day! Study animal science production and leadership in Australia, the country known for its large land mass and the large number of beaches. Australia is as big as the US mainland but has only half the population. The study abroad will be based at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga. You will study local animal production issues and leadership opportunities through hands-on experiences, farm visits, field trips and local sight seeing. At the end of the program, each student will have a solid understanding of animal production in a different environment and be certified as a trained facilitator.

Students will reside in double rooms, with some meals provided.

Whether you're interested in animal science, leadership techniques, Australian customs or seeing the sights, the Winter Session in Australia is your chance to experience things down under!

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 7 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

ANSC419-070 - Topics in International Animal Agriculture: Australian Livestock Production (4 cr.)
The study and analysis of animal management and feeding systems in Australia, with emphasis on livestock production in the Riverina Region of southern New South Wales. The course will combine traditional lectures and student-led discussion sessions with farm visits and excursions to agriculturally significant sites in the region, providing practical, hands-on experience for students. An Honors Section with limited enrollment will be available.

ATED467/667-070 - Leadership Tools and Techniques (3 cr.)
Leadership development is viewed differently by different cultures. Learn about leadership in an Australian environment and explore some of the leadership opportunities available in Australia. There will be some leadership theory covered in this course; however, the course will focus primarily on developing your leadership abilities in dealing with controversial global issues common to agriculture and technology such as biotechnology.
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). We encourage freshmen to apply! For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

Australia ANSC/ATED Program Costs
Participants in the Australia ANSC/ATED program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than September 26, 2003 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
