Study Abroad - Programs
Winter 2004
Ireland EDUC
January 2, 2004 - February 2, 2004

Program Overview

Study Education and Literature in Ireland, the land of leprechauns, castles, and blarney. This beautiful country with its friendly people, green pastures, active nightlife and rich literary tradition will be the site of this excursion to the Emerald Isle.

Our first stop is Dublin, home to many of Ireland's literary giants, where we'll trace the steps of Shaw and Joyce and see the magnificent Book of Kells. Then, on to the southern coastal town of Cork, Ireland's second largest city, where we'll visit Irish schools as we learn about adolescent development. Then, on to the western coast of Galway, a center of Irish culture, where English-Gaelic bilingual issues will be a focus of study in the schools. Next, we'll travel up to the north of Ireland to see how conflict resolution is taught to adolescents in Northern Ireland. Then, before heading back to Dublin, we’ll visit the small town of Sligo on the northwestern coast which was the home of Yeats and his mystical literary landscape. Along the way, there will be excursions to Blarney Castle, the Ring of Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher, the Sligo literary festival, the Giant’s Causeway and the Triangle Bar area and Irish Theater in Dublin. Students will reside in double rooms in hotels with breakfasts provided in the Program Fee.

Whether you're interested in Irish literature and culture, adolescent development, or exploring a country rich in tradition, and known for its friendly people and convivial atmosphere, the Winter Session in Ireland is your chance to experience Eire at its best.

Preference given to: Elementary and secondary education majors.
