Study Abroad - Programs
Winter 2004
Brazil FLLT/LAS
January 3, 2004 - February 5, 2004

Please note that this program has extended their application and first deposit deadline to October 10, 2003. However, all scholarship materials are still due by October 10, 2003.

Program Overview

The program begins with two days in Rio de Janeiro, a most unusual city. After a morning of rest in our hotel at Copacabana Beach, we will go on a shanty town (favela) tour and see the forest of Rio. The next day we will ascend Corcovado for a magnificent view, have lunch at Leme Beach, then go to the top of nearby Sugar Loaf (Pão de Açúcar), and see other sights. Then we fly north to João Pessoa, Brazil’s third oldest city, and the eastern-most point of South America. It is Brazil’s greenest city and has a population of 450,000. It is large enough to support multiplex cinemas and malls yet small enough to avoid the problems of larger cities.

This program is designed for students who have studied Spanish at the 300-level. Your course work will be at the Cultura Inglesa institute, where Cambridge University sends their students to learn Portuguese. It is fully air-conditioned and has a computer lab. There will be excursions to nearby cities such as Recife, “the Venice of Brazil,” and the capital of the state of Pernambuco. Also we will visit Olinda one of UNESCO’s World Cultural Monuments, a colonial city overlooking Recife. Cultura Inglesa will plan tours for every weekend we are there.

The program costs include all air and ground transportation, lodging and boarding costs. You will reside either alone or with a roommate in private Brazilian homes. Bedding and linen are provided, as well as three meals. If lunch is not offered where you live, you will be given a stipend for that meal.
