Program Overview

Study Spanish culture in Granada, one of the most beautiful cities in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. Granada's imposing Moorish palace, the Alhambra, overlooks the city and reflects its rich history. A Mediterranean climate, scenic location and excellent introduction to Spanish culture make the Summer Session in Granada an experience not to be missed.

The Summer Session in Granada combines an introduction to the history and contemporary life of Spain with a variety of social and cultural activities. Courses in the music, language and culture of Spain are typically offered, and most are taught in English. The University of Granada hosts this Summer Session, and classes will be taught by its faculty and the University of Delaware's faculty director. Lectures will be supplemented by regional excursions, which typically include visits to the nearby cities of Cordoba and Seville. Day-trips to sites in and around Granada - including the Alhambra - are also scheduled. Participants will spend the first four days of the session in the bustling capital of Madrid, taking day-trips to the medieval cities of Segovia and Toledo.

Singly or in pairs, students will reside in private Spanish homes. Bedding and linens are provided, as well as all meals.

Estudia la cultura española en Granada, una de las ciudades más hermosas en la región de Andalucía, en el sur de España. La Alhambra, un lujoso e impresionante palacio árabe, domina la ciudad desde su colina y refleja su tradición histórica. El clima mediterráneo, un paisaje de enorme belleza y una excelente introducción a la cultura española hacen del periodo de verano en Granada una experiencia que no te debes perder.

El periodo de verano en Granada combina una introducción a la historia y la vida contemporánea en España con una gran variedad de actividades sociales y culturales. Tradicionalmente se ofrecen cursos sobre música, cultura y lengua española, la mayoría de los cuales se imparten en inglés. La Universidad de Granada acoge esta sesión de verano, y las clases se impartirán por profesores de esta universidad y el profesor-director de la Universidad de Delaware. Las clases se verán complementadas con excursiones dentro de la región a ciudades como Savilla y Córdoba. También se han programado excursiones de un día en Granada y sus alrededores, incluida una visita a la Alhambra, como no podía ser menos. Los alumnos participantes pasarán los cuatro primeros días en España en su capital, la vibrante y animada ciudad de Madrid, desde donde se harán excusriones de un día a las ciudades medievales de Segovia y Toledo.

De forma individual o por parejas, los estudiantes residirán con familias españolas. Este tipo de alojamiento incluye tanto la cama y la ropa de cama como las comidas.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 or 7 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course. All students take SPAN 208 and choose one language course depending on their level of Spanish.

MUSC209 - History of Spanish Music (3 cr.)
This course, taught in English, covers the most outstanding traditions of Spanish music, including Arab-influenced Andalusian music, the music of the 13th century, the schools of the "Renacimiento," 17th-century court music, the "Zarzuela," 19th-century Nationalism, and the most modern tendencies of the 20th century.

Review of grammar, continued practice in speaking and writing, and reading texts of average difficulty.
Prerequisite:Spanish 106 or four years of high school Spanish

SPAN206 - Culture Through Conversation (3 cr.)
Discussion of topics drawn from contemporary Spanish life. For students at the 200-level who wish to broaden their knowledge of Spanish culture while improving their oral and aural language skills.
Prerequisite:Spanish 107 (Intermediate Spanish) or equivalent

SPAN208 - Contemporary Spain I (3 cr.)
Introduction to contemporary Spain, its culture, its people, their way of life, and the issues confronting them. Material presented in the form of guided tours and guest lectures. Taught in English.

Requirements
The Summer Session in Granada program is designed for any student, regardless of major or language background, who has an interest in Spanish culture. There is no language prerequisite to participate. Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). We encourage freshmen to apply! For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

Granada, Spain Program Costs
Participants in the Granada, Spain program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Summer Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than March 12, 2004 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
