Study Abroad - Programs
Summer 2004
Kobe, Japan
June 3, 2004 - July 5, 2004 (tentative only)

Program Overview

If you have a yen to study Japan's culture and language, come to Kobe this Summer Session. Kobe, one of Japan's oldest port cities, has a rich cultural heritage, and is not far from some of Japan's most important historical sites. Nestled between its harbor on the Seto Inland Sea and the Rokko mountain range, Kobe is a quiet residential city, home to approximately 1.5 million people. You'll have the chance to experience the daily life of Kobe and its citizens, while sharpening your language skills - and because Kobe has excellent access to the national transportation service, you'll be able to explore Japan more widely.

If you're interested in learning Japanese and understanding contemporary Japan, you'll find Summer Session in Kobe an enriching experience. Shoin College will host the program and classes will be held at its Japan Study Center; students will also have access to Shoin's main campus, with its breathtaking view of Kobe. Language courses will be taught by professional instructors of Japanese, while culture classes will be taught by the University of Delaware faculty director and several guest lecturers. Lectures will be supplemented by regional excursions, typically including visits to the cities of Osaka, Himeji and Kyoto, to Mt. Rokko National Park, and to local sites of interest, such as shrines and museums. A home-stay weekend in Nara, where you'll have the opportunity to experience family life, is also included. In addition, Shoin students will visit the group at the Center, serving as language partners.

At the Japan Study Center, you'll have a single room that includes a private bath with Western-style facilities. The Center also has a common kitchen and dining area for your use. You'll receive a meal allowance, and your faculty director will advise you on dining out inexpensively in Kobe.
