Program Overview
For centuries, London has been part of an international network of
commerce and politics making it a world city that brings together
peoples and cultures from different parts of the Empire and Europe. The city
has spectacular museums, galleries, and contemporary cultural venues
that make it an ideal site to explore those links in a summer study
abroad programs. Classes for the Sociology/Political Science Summer in
London are held at the University of Delaware's London Centre, a
beautifully restored Georgian townhouse next door to the one-time home
of novelist Charles Dickens. The London Centre is walking distance to
the British Museum, enabling students to leisurely explore its many
treasures, and after class one can hop on the nearby London Underground
(the "Tube") and discover the other museums, shops, markets and sights
of this city on the Thames. Students will live in flats, all with easy
access to the Tube, shopping, and markets.
Our course offerings in the social sciences and humanities give students
a
lens for appreciating Britain's history and the contemporary scene.
Individual
course projects will provide students with opportunities to explore
neighborhoods, major political institutions, the theatre, and London's
art and
architecture. Outside the classroom, instructors will take students
to visit museums, galleries, historical sites, theatrical productions,
to examine critical issues and Britain's place in the world. Specific
visits will include Parliament, the Tate
Modern, Hampton Court Palace, and other sites of interest. In addition,
the summer program also includes local and regional excursions, to
nearby Oxford and a long weekend in Scotland's historic capital of
Edinburgh. The program also allows time off for independent weekend
travel, with the opportunity to explore more of the United Kingdom and
Europe.
