Study Abroad - Programs
Summer 2004
London ENGL (Yagoda)
June 10, 2004 - July 10, 2004

Program Overview

It would be hard to argue with the proposition that London is the most exciting city in the world. It is certainly the one with the richest literary heritage and most vibrant press. This program tackles literature through an in-depth look at what many critics consider to be the greatest novel of the greatest London novelist, Charles Dickens. And it immerses itself in the rambunctious world of English newspapers, from the tabloids to the Times--all of them based, of course, in London.

All classes meet in the University of Delaware's London Centre, a well-equipped and fully-wired facility in the heart of historic Bloomsbury. But there will be frequent excursion throughout the city. Students will be provided with passes for London buses and the Underground, so they can explore on their own as well. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday, leaving the weekends free for travel around the United Kingdom and Europe.

Students will live in double rooms in a central London hotel. Most meals will not be provided.

There is no city like London—the theater, the shopping, the mix of people, and the heritage. And it’s at its best in June, with the flowers blooming and an average temperature of 68 degrees. A London Summer Session provides the perfect opportunity to get closely acquainted with this amazing city.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

ENGL409 - Topics in Journalism: The British Press (3 cr.)
England boasts no fewer than eleven national daily newspapers. (The U.S., by comparison, has only three.) They range from the most scurrilous scandal sheets to high-toned broadsheets like The Times and The Guardian. The journalistic culture is marked by cutthroat competition, news coverage that has an admitted political slant, a sometimes mystifying attitude toward "the truth," and fierce loyalty--every British household swears by the newspaper it receives. Through a consideration of the history of the British press and a detailed examination of the papers today--always comparing them with their U.S. counterparts--the class will explore the way the press both reflects and determines the concerns of the larger society.
Prerequisite:ENGL 110
Restrictions:May be repeated once for credit when topics vary. Counts towards English major only as part of the journalism concentration.

ENGL480 - Seminar: The Great London Novel: Our Mutual Friend (3 cr.)
Our Mutual Friend was Charles Dickens' last completed novel. It was also the one most strongly linked to London. In it Dickens explored every stratum of the city's social world and--seemingly--every corner of its geographical landscape. Along with examining the book from a variety of perspectives, we will retrace Dickens' steps, metaphorically and literally--examining some of the works and the period of his that led up to the novel, and visiting many of the places he wrote about. A bonus is that the class meets next door to Dickens House. Now a museum dedicated to the author's life and times, it is where Dickens lived when he composed some of his greatest works.
Satisfies the following requirements:
Second Writing

SOCI467 - Topics in Journalism: The British Press (3 cr.)
