Program Overview

Join Prof. Weaver on this unique program, designed to give students a general understanding of the practices and the varied institutional and cultural environments of North American business. The program combines classroom activity with travel (northeast, midwest, northwest, and coastal and desert southwest in the U.S.), and is intended primarily for students with little or no exposure to business practices, institutions, and cultures in North America.

The goal of American Business and Its Environment is to help students -- especially international students -- better understand the mix of business practices, institutions, and cultures within North America, with particular emphasis on the U.S. The program provides this through a mix of traditional classroom lecture and discussion, reading and video materials, and personal travel experiences visiting businesses, institutions, and culturally significant sites in different regions of the U.S. For more program details, check the faculty director's website.

Please note: to be considered for this program, you must send the program director (Prof. Gary Weaver) a one page essay explaining:

  1. the extent of your prior travel experiences in the U.S., and
  2. the reasons why you want to participate in this program.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

All students must enroll in 3 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

BUAD867 - Introduction to American Businesses (3 cr.)

Requirements
The USA MBA Winter Session program is designed for graduate students already enrolled in the University of Delaware MBA program. This program is designed to most benefit students with very little exposure to North American business and culture. Priority will be given to students with little or no travel and/or living experience in North America. If space is available after qualified students in that category are admitted, we will open the program to other students, again with priority given to those with less experience around North America. Please note: all applicants must submit the required essay (described in the Program Overview above). For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

USA MBA Program Costs
Participants in the USA MBA program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Spring Semester and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the
faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than October 10, 2003 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
