Costa Rica FLLT - Group 2

Program Overview

Study Spanish in Costa Rica, a beautiful country full of natural wonders that spends more on education than on defense and boasts the longest tradition of orderly, democratic government in Central America. Students will enjoy the temperate climate, the fine public buildings, and the university facilities of its modern capital, San Jose, which lies in the shadow of a magnificent mountain range with peaks over 12,000 feet. The Universidad de Costa Rica will host the winter program.

The winter session group typically takes two weekend excursions - one to the Volcan Arenal; and the Tabacon Hot Springs and one to the Pacific coast. A number of day trips are planned to expose students to the culture and unique natural environment of Costa Rica. These may include several visits to various national parks to explore volcanos such as , Poas, and Irazu, a cloud forest, a butterfly farm, and natural hot springs. The group usually visits the Colonial Capital of Cartago and a coffee plantation as well. Visits to sites of interest in San Jose, such as the Museo Nacional and the Museo del Oro, are also included.

Students (applicants) interested in studying abroad in Costa Rica are encouraged to obtain their passports before the program deadline. Materials which require passport numbers are needed immediately upon acceptance to the program. Students without passports will be asked to expedite their passports which has an additional cost; obtaining the passports early will save money.

Students reside either singly or in pairs in private Costa Rican homes. Bedding and linen are provided, as well as breakfast and dinner daily. Students are given a stipend to purchase lunch near the university campus during the week.
Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 or 7 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course. Please note: This program is designed for intermediate-level students of Spanish (i.e. those who have not yet reached the 300-level). All students take SPAN 207 and choose one language courses depending on their level of Spanish.

SPAN107 - Spanish III - Intermediate (4 cr.)
Review of grammar, continued practice in speaking and writing, and reading texts of average difficulty.
Prerequisite:Spanish 106 or four years of high school Spanish
Satisfies the following requirements:

SPAN206 - Culture Through Conversation (3 cr.)
Discussion of topics drawn from contemporary Spanish life. For students who wish to broaden their knowledge of Hispanic culture while improving their oral and aural language skills.
Prerequisite:Spanish 107 or Spanish 112 or equivalent courses or permission of instructor

SPAN207 - Contemporary Latin America I (3 cr.)
Introduction to contemporary Latin America (specifically Costa Rica), its culture, its people, their way of life and the issues confronting them. Material presented in the form of guided tours and lectures by invited guests. Taught in English.

Requirements
The Winter Session Program in Costa Rica is designed for any student, regardless of major, who has completed either Spanish 106 (Spanish II, Elementary/Intermediate) or its equivalent, or four years of high school Spanish. Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). We encourage freshmen to apply! For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

Costa Rica FLLT - Group 2 Program Costs
Participants in the Costa Rica FLLT - Group 2 program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than October 3, 2003 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.

Please note that final program fees are subject to change until the group's departure date. Final program fees may be increased due to airline taxes, fuel surcharges, exchange rates, or changes in the group size.

  • Application and $200 deposit deadline: October 3, 2003

  • Final program fee balance due: November 7, 2003
  • Tuition and Registration Fee due: December 12, 2003
