Program Overview

Study French in Caen, a dynamic city of 200,000 that blends a thousand-year history with the high-tech wonders of the modern age. Caen's location in the heart of Normandy, just 7.5 miles from the English Channel and a two-hour drive from Paris, makes it very convenient for individual and group travel. Famous for its cider and calvados brandy, cheeses and seafood, Caen provides a treat for the senses for any visitor to the region. The Universite de Caen and its center for foreign students will host the winter program in Caen.

The Delaware group will land in Paris and spend the first several days of the program touring the historic City of Light. Students will have ample time to see most of the capital's major sites, including the famed boulevard Champs Elysees and the world-class Louvre. En route to Caen the group often stops at Versailles to see the magnificent palace and gardens of King Louis XIV. Numerous full- and half-day excursions are planned in and around Caen, including visits to the World War II Landing Beaches and the Memorial Museum for Peace. Trips are typically taken to the towns of Bayeaux and Rouen, and of course to the breathtaking and imposing Mont Saint-Michel.

Students reside either singly or in pairs in private French homes. Bedding and linen are provided, as well as breakfast and dinner daily. Students will be given a dining hall pass which will cover the cost of lunches taken at the university dining hall during the week.
Overview in Foreign Language

Etudiez le français à Caen, ville dynamique de 200,00, amalgame d'une histoire qui date de plus de 1000 ans et de merveilles technologiques de nos temps. Au coeur de Normandie, Caen est à deux heures de Paris et à 15 kilomètres de la Manche. La situation géographique de Caen facilite les voyages. Connue pour son cidre et son Calvados, ses fromages et ses fruits de mer, la ville de  Caen régale les visiteurs de toute la région. C'est l'Université de Caen et le Centre des Etudiants Etrangers qui accueillera les étudiants cet hiver.

Le groupe Delaware fera escale à Paris où il passera les premiers jours du séjour. Les étudiants auront l'occasion de visiter les monuments les plus connus de la Cité des Lumières, y compris le boulevard des Champs Elysées et le musée du Louvre. En route vers Caen, le groupe fera la visite de Versailles, Palais et jardins de Louis XIV. De nombreuses visites et excursions sont prévues dans la ville de Caen et la région avoisinante. Parmi ces visites, on peut citer, les Plages du Débarquement, le Mémorial de Caen - musée de la paix, la ville de Bayeux, Rouen- capitale de la Normandie et, bien sûr, l'incomparable Mont Saint-Michel.

Les étudiants sont accueillis dans des familles, seuls ou à deux. Les draps et les serviettes sont fournis par la famille ainsi que le petit déjeuner et le dîner. Les étudiants auront une carte qui leur permettra de prendre leur déjeuner, en semaine, au restaurant universitaire.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 or 7 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course. Please note: This program is designed for intermediate-level students of French (i.e. those who have not yet reached the 300-level). All students take FREN 208 and choose one language courses depending on their level of French.

FREN107 - French III - Intermediate (4 cr.)
Review of grammar, continued practice in speaking and writing, and reading texts of average difficulty.
Prerequisite:French 106 or four years of high school French

FREN206 - Culture Through Conversation (3 cr.)
Discussion of topics drawn from contemporary French life. For students who wish to broaden their knowledge of French culture while improving their oral and aural language skills.
Prerequisite:French 107 or FREN 112

FREN208 - Contemporary France I (3 cr.)
Introduction to contemporary France, its culture, its people, their way of life and the issues confronting them. Material presented in the form of guided tours and lectures by invited guests.Taught in English.

Requirements
The Winter Session Program in Caen is designed for any student, regardless of major, who has completed either French 106 (French II, Elementary/Intermediate) or its equivalent, or four years of high school French. Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). We encourage freshmen to apply! For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

Caen, France FLLT Program Costs
Participants in the Caen, France FLLT program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than September 24, 2004 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
