Expand your knowledge in the nearby Americas, and experience the blend of African, European and American cultures that form the island of Cuba. The largest island in the Caribbean, its 2,320 miles of coastline has deep harbors, coral islands and white sandy beaches.
Cuba is one of the most influential sources of Caribbean popular music. Its infectious African drumming and rhythms overlaid with Hispanic melodies and instrumentations have inspired dance and song such as danzon, son and cha cha cha since the 1880s. Havana (La Habana) is the largest city in the Caribbean and the center of all things Cuban and stands today much as it was built 100 years ago or more. There's an air of faded glory about the city as big '50s and '60s American automobiles still dominate the streets. The city is peppered with glorious Spanish colonial architecture, much of which is under restoration.
The winter session program is hosted by the prestigious Casa de las Americas, an institution with a magnificent history of coordinating cultural encounters between Cuban intellectuals and students from universities in the United States such as Duke, University of California (Berkley, Davis), University of Washington, Harvard University and the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, among others.
Your group will enjoy a semitropical climate with temperatures averaging 75 degrees. Three weekend excursions are planned to Pinar Del Rio-Soroa Gardens and Valle de Vinales; Varadero Beach and Cuevas de Bellamar, Matanzas; Trinidad and El Salto del Hanabanilla, Cienfuegos. A number of day trips are planned to expose students to the culture and unique experience of Cuba. These will include visits to Old Habana, museums and the world renown Tropicana nightclub.
The program costs include air and ground transportation, lodging, some meals, and excursions. Students will reside in pairs either at the residency of the Casa de las Americas or in hotels.
