Program Overview

Athens has attracted visitors from far and wide for some 3500 years. Dominated by the Acropolis with its wealth of spectacular Classical architecture, Athens is an energetic, cosmopolitan metropolis. The Athens program will be housed in the heart of the city at the Athens Centre, which has been active in promoting Greek culture for over 30 years. Located in the Mets Pangrati neighborhood, the Athens Centre is conveniently located near to the major monuments and attractions in the city.

The Athens program itself will focus on the art, architecture, history, theater and literature of Classical Antiquity, and will comprise numerous site visits, several of them longer overnight excursions. Program participants will, for instance, visit the Parthenon, sacred to Athens's patron goddess Athena, and the Agora, the ancient market place and political hub. Among the destinations for longer excursions are Delphi, the spectacular sanctuary of Apollo, Mycenae, the palace of Homer's lordly King Agamemnon, and Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games.

Students will be housed in furnished apartments in groups of two to four. Each apartment has its own kitchen and bath, and bed linen, blankets, and towels are provided. Students will be responsible for their own meals.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 7 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

ARTH339 - Art and Architecture of Europe (3 cr.)
The aim of this course is to familiarize students intimately with major trends and developments in Ancient Greek art and architecture primarily from the Bronze Age through the Hellenistic period. Artistic media studied will include vase and fresco painting as well as free standing and architectural sculpture. The course will be taught in an eye-witness style; that is, works of art and pieces of architecture will, when possible, be viewed in the "flesh" rather than merely studied in a text. Accordingly, this course comprises frequent museum and site visits in and around Athens. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.

FLLT100 - Essential Foreign Language: Modern Greek (1 cr.)
Basic, practical vocabulary and idiomatic expressions for beginners in Greek.
Restrictions:Open only to students who have never studied Greek or have had less than two years in high school.

FLLT320 - Varying Authors and Genres: Comedy in Ancient Greece (3 cr.)
Cultural study with primary emphasis on the development of democratic thought and practice based on the performance of ancient Greek drama. The study searches for answers to questions of why and under which conditions in Ancient Greece the representation of authority could increasingly be challenged by the authority of the theatre. In particular, the study examines how and why theatrical principles conceptualize the understanding of metaphysics, politics, ethics, and religion. Topics covered include various methods of dramatic analysis, scene analysis, development of plot, fable and dramaturgical practice. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.

HIST340 - Ancient Near East and Greece (3 cr.)
Stresses such themes as the way in which the world view of the ancients was different from ours, and the relationship between the individual and society. Readings in ancient historical works and ancient literature.

Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). We encourage freshmen to apply! For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

Athens, Greece Program Costs
Participants in the Athens, Greece program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than September 17, 2004 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
