Argentina FLLT/LAS

Program Overview

Participants on the Buenos Aires program will be able to experience the rich and varied culture of the cosmopolitan Argentine capital--home to the tango and internationally-acclaimed writer Jorge Luis Borges. Buenos Aires is packed with interesting places and diverse neighborhoods to visit, and boasts many beautiful parks and lively "confiterías," or cafés. Since January is summertime in the southern hemisphere, students will be able to enjoy favorite vacation spots of the Argentines.

Weekend excursions are planned to the magnificent Iguazu Falls on Argentina's northern border with Brazil, to a beach resort such as Punta del Este in Uruguay; Other excursions include a visit to an estancia, (cattle ranch); Mendoza in Western Argentina including a day trip to the Andes on the Chilean Border and a tango show.

The Universidad de Palermo will host the program. Students reside either singly or in pairs in private Argentinian homes.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 or 7 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

FLLT100 - Essential Foreign Language: Survival Spanish (1 cr.) pass/fail
Basic, practical vocabulary and idiomatic expressions for beginners in the language.
Restrictions:Restricted to students who have had less than two years of high school Spanish.

GEOG101 - Physical Geography: Climatic Processes of Latin America (3 cr.)
Introduction to processes responsible for weather, climate and climatic change. Implications of climate for ecosystems and human activities. Earth-sun relations, geographic coordinate systems and map interpretation.Taught in English.

GEOG226 - Geography of Latin America (3 cr.)
Introduction to Latin America from a geographical perspective. No previous exposure to geography is required. Course provides a background and comprehension when reading or hearing about events in Latin America and or visiting Latin America. Taught in English.

POSC436 - Politics and Literature (3 cr.)
Class, civil rights, feminism, revolution and other political issues, examined through novels, film and other literary works. Taught in English.

SPAN206 - Culture Through Conversation (3 cr.)
Discussion of topics drawn from contemporary Spanish life. For students who wish to broaden their knowledge of Hispanic culture while improving their oral and aural language skills.
Prerequisite:SPAN 107

SPAN207 - Contemporary Latin America I (3 cr.)
Introduction to contemporary Latin America (specifically Argentina), its culture, its people, their way of life and the issues confronting them. Material presented in the form of guided tours and lectures by invited guests. Taught in English.

Requirements
The Winter Session Program in Buenos Aires is designed for any student regardless of major who wishes to improve his or her Spanish skills or who simply has an interest in the culture, music, history and politics of the region. Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

Argentina FLLT/LAS Program Costs
Participants in the Argentina FLLT/LAS program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than September 3, 2004 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.

Please note that final program fees are subject to change until the group's departure date. Final program fees may be increased due to airline taxes, fuel surcharges, exchange rates, or changes in the group size.
