Study Abroad - Programs
Winter 2005
Australia HESC
January 2, 2005 - February 4, 2005

Please note that this program has an early application and first deposit deadline of September 17, 2004.

Program Overview

Spend your winter session studying sports and leisure with applications to Australia. Join Professors Goodwin and O’Neill for an adventurous month in four different Australian locations -- Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. This program will incorporate lectures with visits to sports facilities, meetings with guest speakers, as well as the opportunity to try some of the local athletic activities.

Academically, this program will look at sport and leisure from several angles. We will explore how athletics play a strong role in the lives of everyday Australians. This will include a close examination of gender issues, looking at sports both traditionally played by – as well as those new to – women. Some of the activities to be covered in the course include rugby, cricket, soccer, Australian Rules Football, diving, tennis, surfing and a variety of other outdoor water sports. Note that students from all academic disciplines are welcome on this program.

We will officially begin in Sydney, home to the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. While in Sydney, we’ll tour the Olympic facilities while getting a good introduction to the sport and leisure pursuits of the country. This first week will also include a trip to the world-famous opera house, and possibly a climb up the Harbour Bridge. Our visit to Melbourne will look at the important role that the Australian Open Tennis Championship plays in the lives of local Aussies. Then we’ll travel to Brisbane, a smaller city rich in sport and leisure activities, on our way north to Cairns. A leisure-focused program would not be complete without the chance to snorkel or scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef. Group sightseeing may also include excursions such as bushwalking in the rainforest, touring museums, and up-close encounters with koalas and kangaroos.

Accommodation: The group will be housed in a mixture of dormitories, hotels and possibly apartments, depending on the cities visited. A few meals will be provided.

Whether you’re interested in sports, women’s studies, or Australia in general, this Winter Session program is your chance to experience the legendary land Down Under.
