Italy LING/ENGL
June 5, 2005 - July 6, 2005


Program Overview

Come and experience Italian social, linguistic, and business practices in three of the most beautiful regions of Italy - Florence, Rome and Naples. In addition to other tours within these three cities, the group will take excursions to such areas as Siena, Pisa, the Vatican, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast and Capri. Students will be housed in 3- or 4-star hotels during their stays in Florence, Rome and Naples. This program will contribute significantly to appreciating social, linguistic and cultural diversity as an invaluable part of a University of Delaware education.
Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course. All participants take two courses.

ENGL312 - Written Communications in Business ( cr.)
Examines the role of written communication in corporate decision making. Students write memos, letters, proposals and reports that simulate on-the-job communication tasks, and are encouraged to use materials from their fields of specialization.
Prerequisite:English 110 or equivalent course or permission of instructor
Satisfies the following requirements:
Second Writing
      Satisfies requirement for all majors in the College of Business and Economics

LING101 - Introduction to Linguistics I (3 cr.)
Nature of language: structure of sounds, words, sentences, and meaning; relationships of language and society, culture, and thought. Emphasis is on language universals and variation both within and between languages, including non-Western and non-white varieties.

LING480 - Introduction to Sociolinguistics (3 cr.)
Theories (e.g., variation theory), research and methods of analysis of the interrelationships of language and society. Particular attention paid to application of sociolinguistic research to the solution of educational problems of various groups.
Satisfies the following requirements:
      Satisfies requirement for Linguistics minor/concentration; satisfies requirement for Elementary Education concentation in ESL
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). We encourage freshmen to apply! For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

Italy LING/ENGL Program Costs
Participants in the Italy LING/ENGL program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Summer Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than March 11, 2005 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.

  • Application and $200 deposit deadline: March 11, 2005
  • $800 deposit deadline: April 5, 2005
  • Final program fee balance due: April 22, 2005
  • Tuition and Registration Fee due: mid-May, 2005
