Program Overview
The Department of Business Administration, Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics and the Baltic Business School announce a two-week study abroad program focusing on Innovation and New Business Creation in the electronics/information technology and biotechnology industries in Sweden and Copenhagen. This region is one of the fastest growing areas in the world for communications and biotechnology industries. The region presents unique opportunities and challenges for high tech new ventures.
We will study the organizational, human resources and technology management characteristics of the region and the industries they support. Company visits will include companies such as Sony Ericsson, Vodafone, Tetra Pak, C-Pen, AstraZeneca, Gambro, and Lyckeby Stärkelse, in cities including Karlskrona, Lund, Kristianstad, Åhus and Copenhagen. Company visits will be further informed by lectures and discussions with the regions experts in biotech such as Dr. Jens Laage-Hellman and high-tech new ventures, Dr. Sigvald Harryson.
In addition to touring companies and their locale, we will take advantage of the rich cultural heritage of Sweden. Following the maritime heritage of Sweden, our transportation from Kalmar to Karlskrona and return will be via sailing yacht. The sailing excursions will provide opportunity for teambuilding among program participants as you crew the yachts in a friendly race.
We will spend the first weekend at the seminar and resort island, Senoren, off the coast of Karlskrona, and on the second weekend have the opportunity to take in the Mid-Summer celebration in Kalmar, the sister city of Wilmington, Delaware. This is a first Summer session program.
Class will meet at the UD Campus for preparation and discussion on evenings of June 6, 8 and 13, then will depart for Kalmar, Sweden via Copenhagen on June 15. Our return will be scheduled for June 30. Course work will conclude with written assignments due July 8.
The program fee will cover 14 nights accommodations, transportation to and from all conference sites and company visits, all company visits and formal group outings, 5 breakfasts, 6 lunches and 5 dinners. Students will be responsible for their own airfare (estimated to be around $1,100), meals outside of sponsored events and incidentals and personal excursions.
UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
