Program Overview
Study the international hospitality industry in Switzerland and Italy in summer 2005. Host for the first 3+ weeks of the program will be HRIM's partner school, the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality (SSTH). Tucked away in the mountains, SSTH overlooks Chur, a town at the center of the holiday corner of Switzerland. Chur provides a unique opportunity to learn about and interact with European hospitality operators. It is convenient to a number of world-class resorts and is a short distance from Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein, countries we plan to visit on program excursions to see a variety of European hospitality-related operations. For example, in Germany we will spend two days in Munich and visit a four-star hotel and one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In addition to seeing some Swiss four and five star hotels, we will visit a Swiss cheese producer, a chocolate manufacturer, and a wine maker. While in Switzerland, you will attend class, eat, and be housed in single dormitory-style rooms with a bath, at SSTH.
In week 4, we will travel to Italy to experience its world-famous cuisine and learn how wine is produced. We plan to visit Trento, Parma, Verona, Florence and Siena. Along the way we will stop at the Parmigiana Reggiano cheese factory and spend a day in Cortona participating in cooking classes. Finally, we will spend the last two days in Rome where you will have the opportunity to sightsee, shop and of course, dine. While in Italy, you will stay in triple rooms in tourist-class hotels.
The program fee includes all lodging, your meals in Switzerland at SSTH, your breakfasts in Munich and Italy, as well as two meals in Cortona, a dinner in Trento, lunches at the 2 vineyards we visit in Italy, and a closing dinner in Rome. If you're interested in the hospitality industry, and want to add an international dimension to your studies, you'll find this summer session an enriching experience.
