Program Overview
The program will begin in Rio de Janeiro, known as the Marvelous City (a Cidade Maravelhosa) for its majestic natural beauty with neighborhoods nestled between a magnificent bay and dazzling beaches on one side and a mountain range affording breathtaking views on the other. Our hotel will be a block from the famed Ipanema Beach. In Rio we will tour a shanty town (favela), visit a museum, and ascend Corcovado and Sugar Loaf mountains for panoramic city views.
Then we will fly north to Joćo Pessoa. This hospitable city, Brazils greenest and third oldest, boasts 23 kilometers of sandy urban beaches and a brilliant turquoise ocean. In Joćo Pessoa, you will stay with Brazilian families and your coursework will be at the Cultura Inglesa institute, where Cambridge University sends its students to learn Portuguese. It is fully air-conditioned, and has a computer lab. Excursions will include a trip to Recife, the Venice of Brazil, and colonial Olinda, as well as activities such as snorkeling, dune buggy riding, and rappelling.
This program, which focuses on the art, culture, history and language of Brazil, is open to all students, and will be of particular interest to students of Latin American Studies, Portuguese, and Spanish. Program costs include all air and ground transportation, excursions, and lodging and meal costs.
