Study Abroad - Programs
Winter 2006
Argentina PHYS
January 3, 2006 - February 3, 2006

Please note that the Argentina PHYS program accepts students on a rolling basis. We recommend that you apply early if you would like to be considered for acceptance.
Please note that this program has an early application and first deposit deadline of April 29, 2005.

Program Overview

Science claims to be universal. Is that really true? The program will explore this question in Argentina, historically South America’s most scientifically active country.

We will visit major research establishments, some long established ones such as the Observatorio Astronomico in Cordoba and the Centro Atomico in Bariloche, but also the recently created international observatory for cosmic rays in Malargue. Our travels will give us the opportunity to explore Argentina in all its facets. It includes hikes in the Sierras and cycling in Mendoza, and a trip up the Uspallata pass to the border of Chile.

We will start in the historic city of Cordoba at the foot of the Central Sierras and subsequently make our way along the Andes to Bariloche in the Patagonian Lake District. At the end of the program we will return to Buenos Aires from where participants can strike out on their own to the Iguazu Falls on Argentina's northern border with Brazil, enjoy city life, or simply go to the beach.

Accommodations will be provided in conveniently located hotels or apartments. Meals are included during travel and on excursions. In Cordoba and Bariloche the participants will be responsible for most of their own meals.

Please note: The first 12 students to be accepted will each receive a $500 scholarship towards the final installment of the program fee from the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Additional, need-based scholarships are also available from the Department. Applicants who complete the requirements for the CFIS Scholarship will automatically be considered for departmental scholarships on a rolling basis.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

PHYS431 - Acoustics (3 cr.)
Acoustics is the study of sound; its generations, propagation and detection and its wide range of manifestations and applications. The course will cover the basic concepts of vibrations, waves and resonance phenomena, followed by a discussion of how sound is generated, transmitted and detected. These fundamental concepts are then applied to a range of subjects such as acoustic measurements and the ear, musical instruments and the human voice, room acoustics, underwater acoustics, and ultrasonics. Students will be working in small groups solving realistic problems in applied acoustics.

PHYS467 - Astrobiology (3 cr.)
Over the last decade we have seen major advances in our understanding of possibilities of life beyond our planet. Within our own solar system visits to Mars and fly-bys of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn seem to indicate that conditions favorable for extraterrestrial life are not uncommon, and already hundreds of planets have been detected outside our system. This course will summarize our current understanding of the origins and necessary conditions for life. We will then survey our neighborhood, especially Mars, Europa, and Titan. On a larger scale the course will treat cosmic evolution up to the point of the formation of solar systems and discuss exoplanets and methods for finding them.
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).
