China EAS/MUSC/FLLT

Program Overview

China: 5,000 years of history and culture

Study Chinese language, culture, history and music while visiting China’s major historical and modern wonders. On this learning adventure, you’ll study with some of China’s most prestigious educators and make rewarding connections with the locals through campus-living, field trips to world famous attractions as well as non-tourist sites, and many other activities.

While in China, you will stay at Beijing, Xi'an and Shanghai and visit 2 other cities. You will cover major historical sites such as: The Forbidden City, the Imperial Summer Palace, the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Old Hu Tong (back alleys) in Beijing; the famous Terracotta Soldiers, remains of a Tang Dynasty Palace, and Wild Goose Pagodas in Xi'an; the Bund as well as the Old City of Shanghai; the beautiful Suzhou Gardens in "silk town" Suzhou; and the historic "water-bornes" town of ZhouZhuang.

You will sample life on the campus of a premier Chinese university, meet its students and visit its attaching elementary and high schools. You will also experience and study Chinese culture by attending performances such as the Peking Opera, traditional Chinese music concert, Tang court dancing, various acrobat shows as well as classes in calligraphy, brush painting and seminars and exhibitions in martial arts.

During free time, you'll be able to explore the neighborhoods of Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai, and meet ordinary Chinese in all walks of life.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 or 7 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

CHIN106 - Chinese II-Elementary/Intermediate (4 cr.)
Continued practice in the aural, oral, reading and writing skills of Mandarin Chinese including the identification and reproduction of basic Chinese characters. Introduction to formality levels and to reading and writing texts in Chinese characters.
Prerequisite:CHIN 105 (Chinese I-Elementary) or approval of instructor

CHIN107 - Chinese III-Intermediate (4 cr.)
Development of aural, oral, reading and writing skills at the intermediate Chinese level, including continued practice in identifying and reproducing Chinese characters, handling a greater variety of formality levels, and further comprehending spoken (Koutouyu) and written (Shumianyu) language differences.
Prerequisite:CHIN 106 (Chinese II-Elementary/Intermediate) or approval of instructor

CHIN200 - Chinese Grammar and Composition (3 cr.)
This course aims at a further development of all four language skills which the students have acquired from the 100-level CHIN courses. In particular, the course emphasizes a further study of advanced Chinese grammar and basic essay writing. In this course students will not only learn authentic Chinese in terms of idiomatic usages, familiar sayings, and sophisticated grammar structure, but get to know Chinese society and culture as well.
Prerequisite:CHIN 107 (Chinese III-Intermediate) or approval of instructor

CHIN208 - Contemporary Chinese Society (3 cr.)
Surveys major aspects of modern Chinese society. It adopts a topical approach; within each topic, the subject will be discussed in a historical context. Although lectures remain a staple, field trips and excursions constitute a major part of the course. Students are expected to take advantage of the total experience and will be instructed to reflect on what they experienced and to interpret it in light of China's history and culture.

MUSC206 - Music of China, Korea, Japan (3 cr.)
Systematically examines the origin and historical development of the musical cultures of the Far East. Studies how Chinese musical cultural has had an enormous impact on the development of such cultures in Korea and Japan. Includes traditional concerts performed by leading artists and a visit to the Peking Opera.

Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). We encourage freshmen to apply! For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

China EAS/MUSC/FLLT Program Costs
Participants in the China EAS/MUSC/FLLT program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than September 26, 2005 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
