Study Abroad - Programs
Winter 2006
Australia/N.Zealand ECON
January 1, 2006 - January 30, 2006

Please note that this program is highly competitive and will accept only a limited number of applicants.
Please note that this program has an early application and first deposit deadline of April 29, 2005.

Program Overview

Please note: faculty will begin making acceptance decisions in March, with half of the group being accepted over spring break. The other half will be considered in April. All interested applicants must attend an interest meeting if they would like to be considered for this program.

Travel “down under” in New Zealand and Australia, and get a firsthand look at the internationalization of financial, labor and output markets. You’ll also have the opportunity to hear speakers (from academia, as well as from the private and government sectors) address contemporary issues in internationalization and in comparative healthcare.

You’ll tour the Australian cities of Adelaide, Sydney, Cairnes and Melbourne, and see the famous Great Barrier Reef. In New Zealand’s South Island (where the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed), you’ll see some of the most amazing terrain in the world, from majestic fjords to the Canterbury Plains to the Milford Sound.

Please note that this program requires a significant time commitment during the semester prior to travel. Students should be prepared to attend class meetings and work on assignments throughout fall semester.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

ECON367-070 - Health Systems/Labor Markets in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States (3 cr.)
This course will consider the health systems in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. Starting from a consideration of the systems in the U.S., the course will proceed to an assessment of the systems in place in Australia and New Zealand. Key concepts related to health and labor economics will be developed within the context of the 3 countries in question. Guest speakers in Australia and New Zealand will include academic health economists, private sector health officials, and government policy makers. Although based on economic theory, the course will have a strong applied and policy emphasis. One of the main themes will be what policy makers in the U.S. can learn from the labor markets and health care systems in Australia and New Zealand.
Prerequisite:ECON 151 and 152 or equivalent courses or permission of instructor

ECON367-071 - Regulation in a Global Economy (3 cr.)
This course will consider the nature and spirit of the regulation of business activity in Australia and New Zealand. Starting from a consideration of the economic foundations of regulation, it will proceed to an assessment of competition, consumer protection, access to essential facilities, and general pricing regulation laws, methods, models and enforcement actions. Where appropriate, comparisons will be made with the US. The course will also include discussions about international trade, exchange rates and macroeconomic policy. Guest speakers in both countries will include judges, regulators, lawyers and economists working in these areas. While based on economic theory, the course will have a strong practical and policy emphasis.
Prerequisite:ECON 151 and 152 or equivalent courses or permission of instructor
