Study Abroad - Programs
Winter 2006
Australia CHEG
January 2, 2006 - February 3, 2006

Program Overview

Study chemical engineering Down Under at the University of Melbourne in Australia. The program will consist of two courses, the Senior Laboratory course, and an introduction to Process Engineering. You'll be accompanied by UD Chemical Engineering faculty but will also interact with experts at the University of Melbourne who will assist you in the lab. You will also learn about process engineering through visits to several different kinds of plants throughout Australia (most likely chemical and food processing plans and oil refineries in or near Sydney and Cairns).

Group excursions are planned to see aboriginal art at Federation Square, for a day trip to the Yarra Valley to see native Australian animals at the Healdsville Sanctuary and vineyards, a day trip along the Great Ocean Road (one of the most beautiful roads in the world), and of course to Phillip Island to see the fairy (miniature) penguins. In their spare time, students will be able to experience the wonders of Sydney (theatre in the opera house, harbor cruise, Coogee or Manly Beach, etc.) and the Great Barrier Reef near Cairnes.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

CHEG445 - Chemical Engineering Laboratory II (3 cr.)
This course will be run in the same way as our on-campus course with students organized in groups of three, doing three experiments during the course, writing three laboratory reports, and presenting one oral report.

CHEG467 - Experimental Process Engineering Course (3 cr.)
This will be a new course giving students experience in modeling a chemical plant, and also the unique opportunity to visit the functioning plants they have modeled. Students will be organized in groups of three (same groups as in the laboratory course), and each group will model one of the three plants, and present oral and written reports to the whole class. Then the three plants will be visited.
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale). For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).

Australia CHEG Program Costs
Participants in the Australia CHEG program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the
faculty director for details.

A $200 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than April 29, 2005 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
