Study Abroad - Programs
Summer 2006
London ENGL
June 5, 2006 - July 7, 2006

Please note that this program has extended their application and first deposit deadline to February 27, 2006. However, all scholarship materials are still due by February 24, 2006.

Program Overview

Whatever your pleasure, London has it all! With a population of just under eight million, London is Europe's largest city, spread across an area of more than 620 square miles from its core on the River Thames. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Europe: around two hundred languages are spoken within its borders and more than 30 percent of the population is made up of first, second- and third generation immigrants.

Today London's traditional sights - Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London are offset by a new millennium sensibility in that virtually every one of London's world-class museums, galleries and institutions from the Royal Opera House to the British Museum has been reinvented. Aside from the scholarly resources available in many libraries, galleries and museums, the city offers an array of learning opportunities, which range from London's diverse ethnic population to a variety of "classical" and "popular" cultural events.

Students will get a sense of this dynamic metropolis by exploring London in a variety of ways-- walking its streets, sampling the offbeat weekend markets of Portobello Road and Camden as well as brilliant theatre companies, dance troupes, exhibitions and musical performances. This interdisciplinary program will introduce students to urban studies and drama from both sides of the Atlantic. The primary emphasis will be on ethnic & cultural intellectual approaches to criticism practiced in England and the United States. In addition to attending two weekly seminars, students will take weekly excursions in and around the city of London. Students will be housed in flats.
