Program Overview
Study the international hospitality industry in Switzerland and Italy in summer 2006. Host for the first 3+ weeks of the program will be HRIM's partner school, the Swiss School of Tourism and Hospitality (SSTH). Tucked away in the mountains, SSTH overlooks Chur, a town at the center of the holiday corner of Switzerland. Chur provides a unique opportunity to learn about and interact with European hospitality operators. It is convenient to a number of world-class resorts and is a short distance from Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein, countries we plan to visit on program excursions to see a variety of European hospitality-related operations. In addition to seeing some Swiss four and five star hotels, we will visit a Swiss cheese producer, a chocolate manufacturer, and a wine maker. While in Switzerland, you will attend class, eat, and be housed in single dormitory-style rooms with a bath, at SSTH.
In week 4, we will travel to Italy to experience its world-famous cuisine and see first hand how wine is produced. We will be based on beautiful Lake Garda – in a resort area – where you can swim, shop and experience the local cuisine. We plan to visit a number of cities in Northern Italy, including Verona and Venice. Along the way we will stop at a cheese factory and visit some well-known wine producers, such as Banfi and Cavit Vineyards. In Verona, we plan to attend an Opera in a 20,000 seat Roman Colosseum and provide you time to sightsee, shop and of course, and dine. While in Italy, you will stay in double or triple rooms in tourist-class hotels.
The program fee includes all lodging, your meals in Switzerland at SSTH, your breakfasts in Italy, as well as some of the other meals in Italy, including a closing farewell dinner. If you're interested in the hospitality industry, and want to add an international dimension to your studies, you'll find this summer session an enriching experience.
The program fee for this year's program does not include airfare to/from Europe. Students will be responsible for getting to and from the program location independently.
