Study Abroad - Programs
Summer 2008
London, England CISC
July 12, 2008 - August 12, 2008

Program Overview

England has a number of well respected research centers (both academic and industrial) in software engineering. The main objectives of this program are to provide majors in CS, IS, CPEG, MIS and others interested in a computing-related career with the practical experiences using modern software tools, exposure to current computing research and development directions through visits to internationally-respected (academic and industrial) research institutions, combined with a cultural experience abroad. The program will be based in London, England, with several visits to research institutions (both academic and industrial) at various locations throughout England, including London, Cambridge, York, Lancaster, and others. The academic visits will include a selection of software groups at University College London and Imperial College London, and also groups at University of York and Lancaster University, plus notable researchers at King's College London and Brunel University. Visits to industrial institutions will include Microsoft Research in Cambridge and IBM at Hursley Park.

Students will live in apartments with kitchen facilities.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

CISC367-070 - Tools for the Software Life Cycle (3 cr.)
This course is the study of software tools and environments commonly used throughout the software life cycle. The course focuses on the kinds of tools used in the software life cycle, the goals of each kind of tool, how the tools are used in practice, and the technology behind the tools. Students will learn about how to choose from among a variety of different tools for a given software engineering task. Tools to be examined will include integrated development environments, version control, software testing, performance profiling, and debugging.
Prerequisite:Successful completion of CISC 220 or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

CISC367-071 - Software Testing (3 cr.)
This course is the study of the theory and practice of software testing. The course examines different aspects of the testing process including test case generation and selection, test execution frameworks for different levels of testing (unit, integration, system), regression testing, test coverage for deciding when to stop testing, and test oracles. Students will learn about automatic techniques and tools useful for testers.
Prerequisite:Successful completion of CISC 220 or equivalent, or permission of instructor.

UNIV367-019 - Study Abroad - London CISC (0 cr.) pass/fail
Students are asked to reflect upon changes in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes that occur due to their study abroad experience.
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale), or with permission of the faculty director. We encourage freshmen to apply! For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.
