Study Abroad - Programs
Summer 2003
Switzerland/Cruise Management
June 1, 2003 - June 30, 2003

Program Overview

Please note: Important Program Change as of 3/3/03
The application deadline has been extended to March 21. Airfare will no longer be included in the program fee, and thus the program fee has been lowered to $3550. Students will purchase their own individual plane tickets after being accepted on the program.

Study the international hospitality industry in Europe this summer. Tucked away in the mountains overlooking Chur, a town at the center of the holiday corner of Switzerland, lies the host for the first half of the program -- the Swiss School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SSH). SSH is a short distance from Austria, Germany, Italy and Liechtenstein, and not far from a number of world-class resorts. Summer Session in Switzerland is a unique opportunity to learn about and participate in European hospitality.

After three weeks in Switzerland, interacting with local hospitality operators and guests, you will take a study cruise from Italy to Greece. While on-board, you'll learn the in's and out's of the industry from cruise managers, also taking classes and participating in behind-the-scenes cruise ship tours.

If you're interested in the hospitality industry, and want to add an international dimension to your studies, you'll find this Summer Session an enriching experience. While in Switzerland, you'll stay, eat and attend classes at SSH. You'll also go on excursions that typically include four- and five-star Swiss hotels and restaurants, a winery and vineyard, and a local cheese producer.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided daily. Accommodation on the cruise ship will be double-occupancy.

Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 7 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

FLLT100-071 - Essential Foreign Language: German (1 cr.) pass/fail
Short course in basic German used in hotels and restaurants in Switzerland.

HRIM367-070 - International Hospitality Operations (3 cr.)
This course is designed to create an awareness of how hotels and food service operations function outside the United States, with a particular emphasis on Europe. Through classroom lectures and a series of site visits and culinary experiences, the student will gain an understanding of how the history and culture of a country influence its hospitality industry's practices and procedures. Students will also spend some time in the School's kitchen to experience different culinary and service techniques.
