Program Overview

Spend this winter in beautiful, tropical Brazil and fulfill group A, B, and multicultural requirements by studying the language, history, culture, and people of Latin America's largest country.

This study abroad program will begin in Rio de Janeiro where students will stay in Ipanema and visit the city's renowned Sugarloaf Mountain and Christ the Redeemer statue, recently designated as one of the eight wonders of the modern world. While in Rio, students will also visit many of the historic sites, museums, beaches, and other attractions that lead Brazilians to refer to Rio as the "Cidade Maravilhosa" (Marvelous City).

After several days in Rio, students will travel to Salvador, a vibrant and colorful city in the Northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia that served as Brazil’s capital for much of the country’s colonial era. While in Salvador, students will enjoy the city’s dramatic beaches and coastline, impressive colonial baroque architecture, and stunning setting on cliffs that dramatically drop into the beautiful Bahia de Todos os Santos (All Saint’s Bay). Students will also experience firsthand the city’s rich blend of African, European, and indigenous influences through the city’s delicious foods, cultural and religious practices, distinctive neighborhoods, and unique sights, sounds, and smells.

In Salvador our program will be hosted by Diálogo School, a well-known cultural and educational center located in the Barra district of Salvador, just 15 minutes from the city’s historic center. At Diálogo, students will take Portuguese and Brazilian culture classes in addition to capoeira, samba, and cooking lessons. Diálogo School will also offer students the chance to participate in mountain biking excursions and to take surfing courses at nearby beaches.

Students will stay with Brazilian families with whom they will be able to perfect their language skills and gain insights into daily life in Brazil. Weekend and one-day excursions from Salvador will take participants to nearby places of interest. One of these will be to the costal city of Aracajú from which students will visit the beaches of Mangue Seco and the São Francisco River which has long served as an important Northeastern Brazilian cultural and economic highway. Other excursions will take us to the Chapada Diamantina, one of Brazil’s most spectacular national parks, the colonial cities of Cachoeira and São Felix, a fortified castle on the Praia do Forte, and the Pro-Tamar turtle ecological reserve. Throughout the session, students will be able to participate in a variety of cultural festivals including one of Salvador’s largest annual events, the visually impressive festival of the Afro-Brazilian sea goddess Yemajá.

This program is open to all students. Program costs include all air and ground transportation, excursions, and lodging and meal costs.
