Study Abroad - Programs
Summer 2003
Philadelphia, USA
July 22, 2003 - July 26, 2003

Program Overview

Medical Technology students, from freshman to graduate level, spend the majority of their intensive training just in learning the basics of their chosen field. While the concept of "professionalism" is included throughout the curriculum, this will provide a unique first-hand opportunity to see such concepts in actual use. This program will introduce medical technology majors and those already in the clinical laboratory field to those aspects of professional development which are essential for success in the modern healthcare arena and for life-long learning. Included will be a first-hand experience at a national clinical laboratory science annual meeting (American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science and the AACC/ASCLS Clinical Laboratory Exposition, Philadelphia, PA) accompanied by offsite discussions and student presentations on campus. Upon completion of the course, the participant will:

  1. Discuss the factors which characterize a profession" and a "professional".
  2. Compare and contrast the professional societies related to clinical laboratory sciences as to purpose, membership and governance.
  3. Outline the components of an annual professional society meeting and the cognitive/psychomotor/affective needs met by each component.
  4. Correlate the experience of attending the ASCLS national meeting/exposition with the concept of "life-long learning".

Please note: The program fee includes four night accommodation in the conference hotel, ASCLS membership, meeting registration, opening mixer and some meals.

The number and gender of program participants will determine lodging arrangements in the conference hotel. Therefore the final program fee cannot be set until after students have been accepted into the program. Depending on the lodging arrangements, the program fee will be set as follows (figures are approximate): $570 double occupancy $490 triple occupancy $450 quadruple occupancy.
