Program Overview
China: 5,000 years of history and culture.
Study Chinese culture, language, and history and experience Chinese art and music while visiting the major historical and modern wonders of China. In this learning adventure, you will study with experts in the field and make rewarding connections with the locals through well-known native instructors, language buddies selected from the students of one of China’s most prestigious universities, field trips to non-tourist sites and many other activities.
While in China, you will stay in Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai. In Beijing, you will visit major historical sites, including the Forbidden City, the imperial Summer Palace, the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the famous Old Hu Tong (an old urban architecture originating in the Yuan Dynasty [1279-1368 AD]), etc. In Xi’an, you will see the 2000-year-old Terracotta Soldiers in their original formation, and remains of a Tang Dynasty Palace and Wild Goose Pagodas. In Shanghai, you will experience both the Old Town as well as the modern Bund, and then make excursions to the beautiful Suzhou Gardens (famous scholars gardens) in “silk town” Suzhou.
You will sample life on the campus of a premier Chinese university, meet with its students, visit schools, and feast yourselves in Chinese culture by attending performances of the Peking Opera, traditional Chinese music, Tang court dancing, various spectacular acrobat shows as well as classes in calligraphy, brush painting and exhibitions in martial arts.
One of the highlights of the program is to meet and chat with renowned traditional Chinese music performers. Other program highlights may include:
-
2008 Beijing Olympic Park tour
- Shanghai 2010 World Expo tour
The program allows you ample free time to explore the neighborhoods of Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai, and meet ordinary folks from all walks of life.
Expect the unexpected!

Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale).
Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, which is based on academic quality and demonstrated ability to contribute to the objectives of the program. Early application is encouraged as acceptances may be made on a rolling basis and the program may fill before the application deadline.
For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.
Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).
UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
