Program Overview
Barbados is among the most developed Caribbean islands, noted for its friendly people and attractive landscapes. Yet, as a small island nation it must contend with challenges to its economy from fluctuating global markets and the effects of climate change and sea-level rise on its beaches. How Barbados responds to pressures on its physical and human environment and strives for policies of sustainability is the focus of this program.
Students register for two of the three courses offered: GEOG 101 Physical Geography: Climatic Processes – Focus on Barbados and the Caribbean; GEOG 102 Human Geography: Case Study of Sustainable Development in Small Island Economies; and POSC 311 Politics of Developing Nations. Also included will be presentations from local officials, field trips to island plantations, local markets, wildlife preserves and coastal management programs from on-shore and off-shore perspectives, and cultural excursions to cricket and polo matches as well as examples of island music and dance.
Students will be housed in furnished guest apartments with cooking facilities located within a short walking distance from both the University of the West Indies campus and the coral sand beaches. A limited number of meals will be included in the program cost as part of the cultural excursions.
