Program Overview
Spend Winter Session 2010 studying hospitality and tourism "Down Under" at the International College of Management Sydney (ICMS). Our program will take you to summer in Sydney's Manly Beach Australia and New Zealand where you will learn about the socio-cultural and environmental issues affecting the development and management of hotels, resorts, cruise ships and restaurants. We will use our visits to some operations in Australia to underscore the importance of sustainable tourism practices.
To explore New Zealand, we will board our Princess cruise ship in Auckland that will take us to several ports on both the north and south islands, including Fjordland National Park, Dunedin, and Christchurch. At some ports you will have free time, while at others we will visit local businesses such as an oyster farm and a coffee roaster. While on the cruise ship, you will be able to take some behind-the-scenes tours of the ship and listen to several of the ship’s officers discuss various aspects of cruise ship management.
With their diverse cultures and lifestyles, our stops present an ideal setting to study the relationship between service management and culture. You will have the opportunity in particular to learn about the customs and foods of Australia's Aboriginals and New Zealand's Maori.
Depending on the location and venue, you will stay in a mixture of hotels, dormitories, and of course in a cabin on the cruise ship. Most meals are provided at ICMS and all meals on the cruise ship are included, plus a number of other meals will be provided.
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.5 (on a 4.00 scale).
Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, which is based on academic quality and demonstrated ability to contribute to the objectives of the program. Early application is encouraged as acceptances may be made on a rolling basis and the program may fill before the application deadline.
For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.
Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).
UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
