Program Overview

Gain first-hand experience with the business and marketing strategies of international companies. While overseas, you'll visit American, Austrian, Czech, German and Hungarian companies engaged in international business. All countries are members of the European Union -- and Germany is a major trading partner of the United States. The Czech Republic and Hungary are former Soviet Block countries trying to develop closer trading relationships with the West.

We will visit companies in Frankfurt, Munich, Prague, Budapest and Vienna. Tours will be conducted at financial institutions, manufacturing companies, service companies and governmental bodies to give a very broad view of both Eastern and Western European business.

Students will be lodged in hotels (two or three to a room) for the duration of the program. This program is designed for undergraduate students of the Business and Economics college. The two courses will consist of 10 - 12 class meetings in the U.S. prior to departure, 16 company visits while abroad, and one research paper for each course.

Please note that this program requires a significant time commitment during the semester prior to travel. Students should be prepared to attend class meetings and work on assignments throughout fall semester.


Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

BUAD393-070 - Seminar on International Marketing Management (3 cr.)
Seminar on selected topics in international marketing management. Combines lectures and visits to local organizations. Research paper typically required.
Prerequisite:BUAD 301 or permission of instructor.
Satisfies the following requirements:
      Counts as BUAD elective for BS candidates.

FINC392 - Seminar on International Financial Management (3 cr.)
Seminar at an overseas location on selected topics in international financial management. Combines lectures and visits to local organizations. Research paper.
Prerequisite:FINC 311 Principles of Finance, or permission of instructor
Restrictions:Used only as a professional elective for finance majors.

UNIV370-046 - Study Abroad - Europe BUAD/FINC (0 cr.) pass/fail
Students are asked to reflect upon changes in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes that occur due to their study abroad experience.
Satisfies the following requirements:
      Fulfills Discovery Learning (DLE) requirement.
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale).

Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, which is based on academic quality and demonstrated ability to contribute to the objectives of the program. Early application is encouraged as acceptances may be made on a rolling basis and the program may fill before the application deadline. For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Europe BUAD/FINC Program Costs
Participants in the Europe BUAD/FINC program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the
faculty director for details.

A $300 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than April 25, 2009 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
