Program Overview

Walk about during Winter Session in the outback of Australia. Australia’s rich ecosystems and indigenous peoples offer a unique view into their wildlife conservation practices. On a three-week guided outback safari, you’ll experience the splendor of Australian animals in their natural environment, and learn firsthand about the real, practical challenges involved in wildlife conservation and photography.

You will travel to Australia with Dr. Jacob Bowman, a wildlife ecologist specializing in large mammal conservation, ecology, and restoration. Dr. Bowman has directed five study abroad programs to Tanzania, Antarctica and Patagonia. Once in Australia, your outback safari will take you to the national parks and reserves of Victoria, Tasmania, the Flinders Ranges, and Bruny Island to name just a few.

On safari, you'll experience a cross-section of the flora and fauna, from the diverse costal regions of the Coorong to the Koalas west of Melbourne. You’ll also experience the aboriginal way of life and their wildlife conservation practices. Daily field excursions will be supplemented with nightly campfire discussion about Australian wildlife conservation.

The program fee includes airfare, in-country transportation, lodging, all safari-related fees, and all meals. Students will be required to bring a sleeping bag/sleeping pad, hiking shoes, two water bottles, a fleece, raincoat, hat, sunglasses, and hiking clothes.

Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale).

Early application is encouraged as acceptances may be made on a rolling basis and the program may fill before the application deadline. For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).
