Program Overview
Walk about during Winter Session in the outback of Australia while learning how to use your Digital SLR camera. Australia’s rich ecosystems and indigenous peoples offer a unique view into their cummunity conservation practices. On a three-week guided outback safari, you’ll experience the splendor of Australian animals in their natural environment, and learn firsthand about the real, practical challenges involved in photography and community based conservation.
You will travel to Australia with Jon Cox, a professional photographer and veteran of fifteen study abroad programs. Cox has directed study abroad programs to Tanzania, Antarctica, Patagonia, Vietnam and across the National Parks of the US. Once in Australia, your outback safari will take you to the national parks and reserves of Victoria, Tasmania, the Flinders Ranges, and Bruny Island to name just a few.
On safari, you'll experience a cross-section of the flora and fauna, from the diverse costal regions of the Coorong to the Koalas west of Melbourne. Through the lens of your camera you’ll experience the aboriginal way of life and their community conservation practices . Daily field excursions will be supplemented with nightly campfire discussion about Australian conservation and include photography critiques of the days shoot.
The program fee includes airfare, in-country transportation, lodging, all safari-related fees, and all meals. Students will be required to bring a sleeping bag/sleeping pad, hiking shoes, two water bottles, a fleece, raincoat, hat, sunglasses, hiking clothes and a Digital SLR Camera.
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale).
Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, which is based on academic quality and demonstrated ability to contribute to the objectives of the program. Early application is encouraged as acceptances may be made on a rolling basis and the program may fill before the application deadline.
For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.
Study abroad at the University of Delaware is highly competitive. See here for an overview of the acceptance process. If you are not selected for your first choice program, we recommend moving your application and deposit to another program (by emailing your request to studyabroad@udel.edu).
UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
