Program Overview

Study fashion, cuisine/food, Art and documentary photography in Paris, Provence, the South of France and Antwerp, Belgium. Students will study in the most beautiful cities and countries in the world for fashion, cuisine, art and documentary photography. We will explore the history of fashion photography, styling for fashion, art and cuisine and attend a number of lectures, guest speakers, studio visits fashion shows and museums. The second week we embark into Provence, visiting Arles, Aix-en-Provence photographing and researching Christian Lacroix, visiting the Les Rencontres’ Arles Photographic, the markets, the museums, the Camargue, all the while capturing the beauty of Provence in fashion and cuisine of the area. The third week we will venture into Antwerp, Belgium for a couple days for additional research into a very rich history of fashion and cuisine in that city. We will visit and researching fashion, museums and historical sites of the city.

Students will stay in Apartments/hotels and will be responsible for most meals. The program will provide a few lunches and dinners in our travels during our trip.


Courses
Students must enroll in all courses for credit and a grade; pass/fail and audit registration is not permitted.

Honors credit may be available. Check with the faculty director and the Honors program for prior approval (before departure).

All students must enroll in 6 credits, as well as the 0-credit UNIV course.

ART367-072 - Travel Study Program: Introduction to Fashion Photography (3 cr.)
Introduction to Fashion Photography will cover fashion photography from the early 1900’s to present. The genre of fashion photography is defined in part and is devoted to photographing clothing, models, still life and other fashion. Class lectures, guest speakers, and studio and museum visits will address fashion photography used for advertisements and editorial usage by Harpers Bazaar, Vogue and any number of magazines and catalogs worldwide. The aesthetic of fashion, photography in the studio/ on location, photographers, and models working past and present will be discussed. Photographers from Baron Adolf de Meyer to Patrick Demarchelier will be reviewed and presented. This is a lecture class only.

ART367-073 - Travel Study Program: Introduction to Cuisine and Documentary Photography (3 cr.)
Food/cuisine and documentary (fashion) photography will be defined and explored. Students will photograph on location (cafe’s, markets etc.) and in the studio. The class will explore how to produce truthful, objective photography of a particular subject. Photography used for advertisements, editorial, packaging, menus or cookbooks, the role of art directors, food stylists, prop stylists and their assistants will all be defined and explored. The course will include lectures, guest speakers, studio and museum visits. This is a hands-on digital photography class. Students will be required to have a digital camera.

UNIV370-047 - Study Abroad - France ART (0 cr.) pass/fail
Students are asked to reflect upon changes in their knowledge, skills, and attitudes that occur due to their study abroad experience.
Satisfies the following requirements:
      Fulfills Discovery Learning (DLE) requirement.
Requirements
Applicants should have a G.P.A. of at least 2.0 (on a 4.00 scale).

Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, which is based on academic quality and demonstrated ability to contribute to the objectives of the program. Early application is encouraged as acceptances may be made on a rolling basis and the program may fill before the application deadline. For all participants, a formal application is necessary, including a deposit, one transcript (non-University of Delaware students only), and one recommendation. An interview may be conducted in person or by telephone.

France ART Program Costs
Participants in the France ART program will be charged University of Delaware tuition for one Winter Session and the program fee. The program fee usually covers round-trip airfare, housing, and all excursions but does not include transportation to/from the group's initial departure airport. Your specific program fee may or may not include these and other items, check with the
faculty director for details.

A $300 deposit towards the program fee must be paid by no later than September 25, 2009 , although we recommend that you pay your deposit within three working days of submitting your application. The deposit is non-refundable if you are admitted into the program. The program acceptance list will be available approximately two weeks later. See below for additional program fee and tuition payment deadlines.

UD students pay all program fee deposits by direct bank transfer via this website: http://www.udel.edu/studyabroadpayments. Non-UD students should send a check, payable to the University of Delaware, to CFIS, Elliott Hall, 26 East Main Street, Newark, DE 19716. Credit card payments are not accepted.
